Gorgonzola: Prices and Production
The graph provides the comparison between Gorgonzola output and its wholesale prices with regard to "fresh" and "ripened" types. To note that the difference between the two prices is steady, mainly due to the different aging period of the two types of cheese.

In addition, the price volatility of both types seems to occur more often at the beginning of the given period while such prices decrease progressively and become more stable in the last period. Such slightly decrease could reflect the current purchasing power of the consumer as well.
This trend line could be explained by the following :
  • The final negotiations/signed contracts over the farm gate milk price in Lombardy and the price on spot imported milk could affect the trend price of Gorgonzola;
  • the seasonal demand (stronger in winter) and the cheese conservation;
  • export volumes;
  • the new entry on the domestic and international markets of counterfeits or similar products at low prices.
