Parmigiano Reggiano: Prices and Production
The graph provides the comparison between: and its prices with regard exclusively to two types: one aged for 12-15 months and the other aged for 24 months. To note that the constant gap between the two trend prices referring to the two types of cheeses seems to be firm: when production increases, the cheese aged for 12 months and over is the first being affected by a reduction in price.

Furthermore, the trend price of both types shows a slight decrease mainly due to the following:
  • production increase
  • domestic demand;
  • export;
  • the new entry on the domestic and international markets of counterfeits or similar products at low prices.
The longer the aging period is, the higher is the quality of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, however that means also significant cost increase. As a consequence, consumer's prices rank at the top value in respect to others common cheeses and for that reason it is not easy to keep them at high level.
